There may be no new stories, but Rowling’s take on witches and wizards is certainly unique. This is a truly wonderful children’s book — although a great read for anyone — about a young English boy, Harry Potter, who is a wizard of amazing, yet unrealized power. Harry champions good sorcery over evil as he attends boarding school and comes in contact with all manner of mythical creatures. In this book, and the ones that follow, the story moves toward the final confrontation between Harry, the most powerful of the good wizards, and “he who shall not be named,” the leader of evil. What makes these books truly special is Rowling’s wit. She’s very dry and funny. (On a personal note, I visited Edinburgh, Scotland recently. I had lunch in The Elephant House, where Rowling penned some of The Sorcerer’s Stone. Overlooking the restaurant is Edinburgh castle, a brooding medieval, grey-stone edifice set high on a hill. Hogwarts anyone?)

Fell in love with this book from the start and remained an avid HP fan right through the end of the 7th book. I re-read them on occasion and have secretly (well, not a secret anymore) wished I could attend Hogwarts. What an imagination Rowling’s has…just magical 😉

Rhonda I actually graduated from Hogwarts – in my mind anyway. 😉 I loved the Harry Potter series. Rowling’s imagination is off the chain. But what I like the most about her writing is her dry wit.

Agreed! I think she’s a thoroughly delightful writer and her humor makes her characters all the more real. She MUST see these stories in her mind as we would see a movie…her detail is incredible, her characterizations so realistic as to make one believe it’s all possible. Fantastic

So true Rhonda. I’m wondering if that’s how certain authors do it? Do they see the scene in their mind’s eye like a movie? For me, it just flows from my fingers to the keyboard kind of like stream of consciousness but I must admit that I fantasize certain scenes at night almost like a living dream.
