Dune – Frank Herbert

DunePossibly the best science fiction novel of all time, this book is so rich and intricately plotted it almost defies description.  In the far future, a duke and his family are sent by the emperor to a sand world from which comes a spice necessary for space travel.  The move is designed to destroy the duke and his family but his son — the feared product of a forbidden liaison between the duke and his witch concubine — escapes and wreaks havoc using the natives of Dune and the planet’s unique ecology to fight the emperor and other factions which seek their ruin.
